THE "Ceramics and glassware" EXHIBITIONThe exhibition features works by educators from the Glassware and Ceramics Department at the Wroclaw Academy of Fine Arts.
The ancient and ongoing process of improving glassware and ceramics production and manufacture has aimed to adapt these products to the ever-growing demands of the people. Pottery and glassware has satisfied not only the practical needs but, due to the refining of form and perfecting the details, also provided their users with aesthetic experience. This several-centuries-long dialogue between form and function has determined the way we currently perceive ceramic and glass objects.
Contemporary glassware and ceramics can thus be seen as innovative – as while employing a traditional medium (clay, glass), the artist works toward his or her own formal solutions, essential in order to accentuate the individual aspect of a given object.
The participating artists have consciously refused to give function to the presented glass and ceramic works – thus removing an element which is crucial to the way that ceramics and glassware are traditionally perceived. In doing so, they encourage the viewer to establish a more direct dialogue with the object, to some extent similar to studying a painting or a sculpture.
It is precisely due to the fact that the ceramic or glass objects have been freed from the function, which had determined their shape, that the artists were able to invest them with character according to their own expression.
